Post Paradise

Altar for the protection of our sick and disabled community

When the Paradise fire came the sick and disabled people were left behind.  Those of us with mobility impairments read the headlines and saw ourselves left behind.

After paradise I couldn't unsee the collective abandonment of my disabled communities. As a Yerba Buena Center for the Arts fellow in Collective Safety, this is a story I wanted to contribute to our conversation.

I weaponize and enchant orthopedics as physical and magical self defense. This was the  wheelchair chair that took me see the the sunset after months of being bed bound in hospitals and care centers following an assault.   These are the crutches I learned to walk again with. Spending time with them  over many months, covering them with gold and gratitude and jewels and charms and nails and sharp things and little prayers for hours helped me recognize and honor their support and offer it to protect others.
